EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DEHYDRATION FINE LINES

Dehydration lines are not (always) age-related

The biological mechanism of skin dehydration

As the main component of our body, water also serves to hydrate all skin tissues. It circulates from the dermis, deep down, to the surface of the skin, at the level of the horny layer where it evaporates naturally. This biological process is called "Transepidermal Water Loss" (TEWL) and serves to transport nutrients to the epidermis.

Hydration loss is normally slowed by the hydrolipidic film, a film that protects the epidermis and slows the evaporation of water.

If this skin barrier no longer plays its role correctly, water loss accelerates and the skin becomes dehydrated.

When your skin lacks water

What happens when skin is dehydrated?

  • A decrease in the number and activity of aquaporins , proteins responsible for regulating water retention/release mechanisms in the skin.
  • A decrease in the protective power of the hydrolipidic film , the skin's barrier function is no longer ensured.
  • A loss of efficiency of the epidermal cells which no longer fix water.
  • A loss of cohesion of the epidermis: the cells are no longer tightly bound together by the intercellular cement like the bricks of a wall. The skin becomes porous and allows even more water to escape.

Water evaporates faster and more strongly than normal. Dehydrated skin shows small furrows, called "dehydration lines".

The skin is also more sensitive to free radicals, important factors in skin aging that naturally attack it every day.

How to prevent and treat dehydration fine lines?

The solution: intense and continuous hydration.

Not all skin is equal when it comes to dehydration. Whether young or more mature, dry or oily, even before the age of 30 your skin can be dehydrated and marked by fine lines.

To compensate for water loss and regain balance, skin sometimes needs a little help. Here are some best practices that will help you maintain maximum hydration, fill in dehydration lines and prevent their appearance:

The different causes of dehydration fine lines

The skin barrier becomes fragile from the inside and the outside.

Several internal or external factors can disrupt water storage, at any age.

The main internal factors  :

  • Having dry skin, genetically or with age: this type of skin is naturally characterized by a deficit in water and lipids.
  • Smoking: Tobacco is one of the causes of dehydration.
  • Following certain drug treatments which result in dehydration of the skin

The main external factors :

  • Temperature variations, sun, cold, air conditioning…
  • Pollution.
  • Hygiene or care products that are too harsh or drying.
  • Some local treatments are aggressive for the skin, for example anti-acne treatments.

Dehydration lines and expression lines, what’s the difference?

Effects of aging or lack of hydration, how to distinguish them?

Although dehydration lines can, over time, turn into wrinkles, their characteristics are very different:

  • Dehydration fine lines are light, superficial, linked to a lack of water that triggers premature aging in the most fragile areas of the face. The skin is thirsty and it lets you know it. Superficial, dehydration fine lines can deepen and turn into wrinkles with the progressive loss of elasticity and firmness. Good news, it is possible to fade them by adopting the right actions early enough and using the appropriate skincare routine.
  • Expression lines, such as the famous "crow's feet" and "lion's wrinkles", are more pronounced than hydration lines. They form deeper furrows and appear naturally with age.

Dehydration lines under the eyes, what to do?

Why do we have dehydration lines under our eyes?

The eye contour is an extremely fragile area. The skin of the eyelids is very thin and naturally low in water and devoid of lipids. The concentration of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, essential materials for supporting tissues, is also lower... However, the eye contour is over-used on a daily basis: it has 22 muscles in constant movement and is subjected to the blinking of the eyelids on average 10,000 times per day! This is why dehydration fine lines appear more easily under the eyes. The eye contour therefore deserves special attention.

Smoothing out dehydration lines around the eyes is possible !

To treat dehydration lines under the eyes , apply a suitable moisturizer by tapping the eye contour with your fingertips, from the inside out. The goal is to moisturize this dry area, decongest and stimulate microcirculation around the eyes. By activating the internal mechanisms, the skin becomes smoother and your eyes become naturally brighter.

4# SUPPORT AND MAINTAIN DAILY HYDRATION

Following an Intensive treatment against dehydration fine lines, follow up with the skincare routine that ensures your skin never lacks water.

  • Derm Repair Serum , restructuring and firming, it stimulates the production of collagen and elastin to maintain the firmness and tone of the skin.
  • The ultra-hydrating and protective Cellular Water Cream is enriched with ceramides and lipids close to the natural structure of the skin. It maximizes the hydration of the epidermis, and strengthens the skin barrier and also ensures remarkable antioxidant protection on a daily basis.

Use the right skincare routine : dry, oily, combination, sensitive or dysfunction-prone skin: not all skin types have the same need for water. It is therefore essential to adapt your skincare to your skin type. Also note that over time, the skin's natural hydration slows down. This means that as we age, adopting a complementary moisturizing routine is essential.

Drink enough : we can never say it enough, but skin hydration also depends on the amount of water you drink during the day. Make sure to drink between 1.5 and 2.5 liters of water per day – especially if your diet is low in fruit and vegetables – to compensate for the body's natural water loss. Drink frequently in small sips, especially if you are physically active and during periods of high heat. The water you consume helps with cell renewal and is a great asset for smoothing out fine lines of hydration.

Moisturize your skin with hyaluronic acid : hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally present in the skin. Present in the epidermis, it is also one of the major components of the dermal extracellular matrix, where it plays the role of a water reservoir. Responsible for the plump and dense appearance of the skin, its quantity deteriorates with age: it gradually disappears from the epidermis, and its quantity decreases and causes an alteration of the structure of the dermis: fine lines then wrinkles appear. Your hydration ritual is therefore essential and the earlier it begins, the more likely you are to keep young, smooth and beautiful skin for a long time. The star ingredient for dehydrated skin is hyaluronic acid, the hydration booster to favor. Well known for its exceptional properties, capable of retaining water like a sponge, it allows the skin to hydrate deeply.

Get enough sleep : During the night, the skin restructures itself and produces proteins essential to support tissues: collagen and elastin. Sleep is also the time when skin cells regenerate.

Massage your face : Institut Esthederm expert protocols in the cabin   and in relays at home   are essential to fade fine lines of hydration and delay the first signs of skin sagging. The massage activates micro-circulation, fades small wrinkles and fine lines of dehydration, relaxes and soothes the skin while helping it to rejuvenate.

Cleanse your skin, morning and evening : acclaimed by beauty experts, double cleansing is the benchmark in the skincare routine for all those who want to preserve the youth and radiance of their skin. We can never repeat it enough, the basis of a beauty routine and even youth prevention remains cleansing. Clean skin free of impurities stimulates cell renewal and boosts microcirculation. But cleansing also prepares the epidermis to receive care. It is only when the skin is perfectly clean that care can be completely effective.
